we plan to analyze the EMG activity of lower and upper limb muscles during spontaneous movements (proven to be an excellent marker for early brain impairment) and to assess the concurrent morphological development and changes in muscle stiffness via panoramic ultrasound and elastography. To assess the changes and interaction between neural and structural variables during early development, we will follow longitudinally a group of very preterm and a group of full-term neonates from birth throughout the first months of life. Our project uses a multidisciplinary approach to overcome this challenge and leverages the established experience with advanced biomedical technologies and the neural control of movements, developmental spinal cord neuronal organization, pediatric research, and clinical aspects of motor rehabilitation, all unique to our research group.
